Default First shave, I'm liking the Dominica Bay Rum Lime

I shaved my face (well parts of it) for real for the first time today and I'm nearly 40 years old. I used a J.A. Henkels I bought from an antique co-op. I gave it good stropping and away I went. It was a little rough, but not too bad. I have a 4k/8k stone on order, and I'll give it a hone when it arrives. The wiki is a gold mine of information. Thanks to those of you who put it together.

The Dominica Bay Rum Lime was ordered by mistake. I figured I'd keep it since it wouldn't be cost effective to return it. Nice aftershave. For one thing, it doesn't smell like lime (at least not to me). Secondly, it made my wife smile; that's a good thing. Thanks again for the wealth of info on this site. I never thought I'd look forward to shaving. Here's a image of my new razor.

You might want to think about sending it to a one of the members here that does honing for the first time.
There are plenty of people you can find in the classifieds.

But whatever you do, let us know how that puppy shaves after!

Looks like a nice razor. If it wasn't honed...I imagine that you had a bit of a rough time in some parts of your shave. Before you start honing, I would definitely send it off to be honed by a pro for the first time. This will give you a baseline for your future honing endeavors. You'll know what sharp is supposed to be and you can compare your honing to that of your baseline razor.

That razor shaved straight (no pun intended) from the antique shop? Not bad. I have an old Boker that I bought from a flee market, it will still shave arm hair but I haven't worked up the cajones to try it on my face. Maybe I will now.....

I'm also a fan of Dominica. Best bay rum I've come across, IMO at least.

Default It was sharp from the get go

I had 5 days of camping fur to hack off. I shaved both cheeks (face...lol), WTG, with the straight. I went with the old Trac II for the rest WTG. I went ATG (across) with the straight for the second pass on the cheeks and neck with a second thin lather of the Colonel's soap. The roughness was probably due more to my technique than the razors sharpness, the razor was bloody sharp after the stropping.

Dominica Bay Rum Lime....Still smelling good.

I like the baseline comparison idea and I'm considering it. I'll use the stone when it arrives, and if I don't get good results, I'll send one of the razors off. Thanks for the suggestions.

Looks like you are off to a good start. I too started on my own and then eventually had a razor professionally honed. The results were much better with the pro honed razor, but it gave me something to strive for. Good luck.

Indeed yes, you are off to a good start and looks like you have a great razor. Henkels is a fine razor I am sure you will enjoy the way it shaves when it is shave ready sharp. Have fun with the new razor.

Henckels is "top of the line" and so is Dominica! A big thanks to Mark/JMS for hooking me up with that stuff!

To clarify, I meant to order the standard Bay Rum Non-lime variety of Dominica's. The lime turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The old school product description is great. Use it for everything and everywhere.

    JimDaddy,

Nice razor. ++1 on the previous advice. If you're new to straight razor shaving, invest the $20.00 to get your antique razor expertly honed before using your new Norton 4k/8k on it.

I'm also a fan of Dominica Bay Rum. In fact, I'm kinda low on the traditional and was thinking about getting a bottle of the lime for variety's sake.
