Good choice on starting out with a Dovo. As several gentlemen have mentioned, the factory edge needs to be refined. That's why I, too, suggest buying the razor shave ready. Vintage Blades razors come shave-ready, honed by Lynn, as well as those from Straight Razor Designs, which are also honed by Lynn. I understand Fendrihan in Canada has shave-ready Dovos.

sadly Vintage Blades, Straight Razor Designs, or Fendrihan do not have the razor I'm looking for. Does Classic Shaving make their razors "shave ready" for free? If not is there any other sites you guys can recommend that offer real "shave ready" blades?

Why don't you call and ask them? In the past Lynn used to hone for them, but nowadays they have different honing service and they are the only ones who can tell you whether the razors they sell have been honed, and if so by who.

Dovos are indeed the "real deal." I purchased a new Dovo #41 Pearlex Stainless from a local shop about three weeks ago. The box was sealed with the original factory tape. (I prefer my razors new and not having shaved anyones else's face.) It shaved right out of the box, but did follow the normal pattern of improving in smoothness over the next week or so of stropping. Since I use a canvas strop along with the leather one, that might actually count as "honing."

I believe that ClassicShaving charges $15 for their pre sharpened razors. They normally sell them presharpened, but you can email them after ordering to ask for a razor in an unopened box and pay $15 less for it.

If you're new to using straight razors, following the advice of the experienced folks on this forum wouldn't be a bad idea. If on the other hand you are comfortable with the idea of using a razor and strop, then I would recommend that you go ahead and get the razor you like from the KnifeCenter.

All of the ClassicShaving razors say PRESHARPENED. I would take this to mean that they are all honed and sold shave ready. I would not think twice about purchasing it if that is the razor you are dead set on.

However, as stated above, why don't you just call them and ask before purchasing.

Obviously you can buy whatever you like, but I am concerned that the scales on this razors are way heavier for the blade.

that's weird because a review of the razor on this website claimed the scales were too light
