Thread: My first shave

So...the dovo perlex finally arrived and i took it for a test drive...!!

Although the place i ordered it told me that its shave ready, it felt like it wasnt so i want your opinion in this..

I only shaved my cheeks which is the easy part.. However the blade felt like it was pulling out my hair instead of smoothly sliding down (i was shaving very slow and carefully)...i didnt even have a long beard... Is this normal? I lathered again and tried it for second time thinking that i may not have lathered well but still it was the same...

Skin got irritated ....the only good thing...not cuts! So far so good...

Is it the lather? the blade? or the way i shave?

I also did a few passes on my leather Hanging Strop

Let me know what i can do to fix this

To answer your questions, maybe, maybe, and definitely! Lather really isn't that tough to get going if you face lather. If you use a lather bowl, it may have been too thin. If you bought the blade from a reputable dealer, that's not going to be your problem. If you bought it from a place that nobody here has heard of, the likelyhood that it's shave ready is slim. It will, about 90% of the time, be your technique. Bad technique mimics a poorly honed razor rather well.

Another concern is how many laps you're doing on your strop, "a few passes" just doesn't cut it. You should be doing about 40 laps on linen and another 60 on leather. If you only have leather, try 100 laps on leather.

Its a single sided leather strop...so i guess i should try more passes..!

from reading a bit on that page i seriously doubt that the razor is shave ready

That said, there probably is members here who can tell for sure baced on experience

Very few razors are sold actually shave ready.

That said, if its your first shave you can't really determine if its your beardprep, technique, or the actual razor that is causing you issues. Having a razor honed and stropped by a long time shaver really is the only way to know if the blade has anything to do with it.

Let me add my voice to the welcoming committee. Technique as a problem, is almost a given on a first shave. It takes time to perfect your shave. As for the blade, unless it's purchased from a member here in the classifieds, 'shave ready' really means, 'I haven't got a clue'.

Hmmmm. If you have a good shaving soap and built a good lather and had a good face prep, then perhaps a few passes on a pasted strop is in order to smooth out the fin some more.

I received two shave ready razors and they gave a presentable shave, but after I gave them 10 passes on my pasted strop, they shaved so much better and were very smooth shavers.

Ok...so..i need someone who knows about blades...a barber or something!

Problem is i live in Cyprus and i dont think there are any good barbers out there or specialists who can help..!

So either i will buy a waterstone and learn from the internet how to hone this, or i will try again with better lather and more leather strop passes...

anyone bought anything from that place before?? Hope im not a victim of bad quality razors...
