    Default O.K. I'm new here

But, I used to shave with a straight razor years ago. I can't remember why I quit but now I am old enough to realize that shaving is more than just a dreary chore to be 'put up with' as it were. Therefore I am starting again. I located my old razor and it is a POS and broken. I do have my strop but gave my hone away years ago. I will have enough stuff to start again as soon as Ebay sends me the stuff I won. I think I will buy some old razors and see if I can learn how to maintain them properly. Where is a good place to get stones ETC. ETC. Who can I ask concerning restoration? I am going to stuff the power cord from my PC into my left nostril and everybody can download all the pertinant info to me.

Welcome to SRP. Kind of the same boat. I shaved with straights in the mid '80s for a short while and gave up on it. Came back to it a couple of years ago after finding SRP and now it is my passion. For hones the Norton combo kit with 220/1000, 4000/8000 is a good way to go. Alternatively the naniwa superstones are real good. A lot of guys like Shapton glass stones. There are also a variety of natural stones but that is a whole other ball game.

If you click on the ads in the margins of your window you'll find vendors that are SRP sponsors. They will carry some of those mentioned stones. For the Norton set Amazon is probably your cheapest source IIRC. Check out the beginner's guide and FAQ in the link below in my sig line for a lot more info and if you don't find what you're looking for there by all means ask questions on the forums.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

    Hi
It's a shame you gave away your original kit-but take heart-if you stick with us on SRP you will enjoy shaving even more than before.
Most of the pleasure i gained early on was in doing the research on the net ,ebay and classifieds etc -putting together the necessary kit at the best price possible.I do admit with hindsight-if i had joined SRP earlier I probably would have made different choices.
Read the wiki in the beginners section -you'll find a wealth of knowledge on buying kit, shaving tips etc.then read the classifieds- you may find something there that interests you.
As far as restoration goes there are a few SRP members who specialise in this area-see the relevant forums.
    Welcome to SRP
    Happy shaving
    Regards

    Noggs

I researched pretty well before I bought my first razor on Epay and there are 3 or 4 others there that I think I will get. I bought a scuttle also and have delved into the stones, how do you bevel the edges and are the Nortons water stones? I figure if I get a bunch of junkers off Epay and pratice restoring them I would be at no great loss if I screwed one up.
