I just found this thread, and being in Barber school, we do straight neck shaves on people.

I also wonder why you wouldn't consider using the straight on your face as well.

Anyway, according to one of our teachers, for a neck shave, after he had done several in the barber shop and the edge started to "tug" a little, he would take the razor to linen. Once the linen wouldn't bring the edge back around, a few passes on the barber hone would bring it back into order, and he would then again go back to linen in between shaves until once again it wasn't cutting as well after linen.

Personally, I never liked having my neck shaved after a haircut, but congrats to you for doing it yourself!
