Question What ground for first razor

6/8, but should I buy a full, half, of quarter hollow ground for my first razor. I'm thinking of getting a entry level dovo?

6/8 entry level Dovo should be fine. THe tortoise is a real looker. I would not hesitate to recommend you one.

    Cheers,

The 6/8 tortoise shell Dovo was my entry razor and I loved the way it shaved.

You can't go wrong with it for your entry investment.

+1 on the 6/8 Dovo Special. If you are starting out I wouldn't worry so much about what type of grind to get. I did that when I started. It created in me a search for the "perfect" razor when in fact I should have just been focusing on my technique. It was easier for me to blame the razor instead of my technique. It took me too long, and way to much money to realize this.
Good luck and make sure to get one that's shave ready razor from a reputable source like straightrazordesigns

More important than the grind is starting with a razor you know is truly shave ready. That way you can focus on your technique (prep, stropping shaving) and not waste time wondering if you razor is sharp. So a Dovo obtained from SRD or another trusted source would make sense.

    James,

You will not be disappointed with an entry level 6/8 Dovo, full hollow, either the Dovo Best, or slightly more expensive the Dovo Special (Tortoise). I have both of these, and they are great shavers

The Dovo Best 5/8 half-hollow is also another great shaver, and very well priced.

I started with wedgier blades as I thought they would be 'better' for my tough beard. As my skills progressed, I found that the full hollows actually gave me more comfortable shaves.

Please remember that shaving preferences are very, very personal.

    Have fun !

    Best regards

    Russ

My first razor was a DOVO Black Star, its a great shaver, and it holds its own against my more expensive razors as welll..!

Heres the link from the Wiki on recommended beginners razors and the rationale behind the recommendation:

    Thumbs up

    james,
You have a lot of good advice here, particularly since the previous posters substantially agree with me. I am quite fond of my DOVO 6/8 Special: it looks good, shaves well, and its fairly large shank dimensions and top and bottom jimps make it easy for me to hold both while stropping and shaving. The icing for that cake is that the fake tortise scales are really handsome. I have other razors too (bad RAD), but the "Turtle" will always stay in the rotation.

    good shaving,
