I have an old weightlifting belt, could I use this for a strop temporarily. It is pretty smooth on one side and is about five inches wide.So I would not even have to do the x pattern, because it is wider than the blade.Ya I know it is goofy ,but I had to ask.A real newb

you could lay it flat on the table if you dont want to cut it down
Old belts can ruin a razor edge it was not made to strop razors and you never know what it has been treated with

and sinse you ask so nice LOL

In a pinch there are many thing you can use to strop a razor. You just need to make sure its smooth doesn't have nicks or cuts any chemicals or other things that found their way into it. In the end though there is a reason people sell actual strops. For long term use I would use an actual strop.

I forget who it was, But I know that someone on this forum DID use a weightlifting belt as a strop... It was one of the ones that was 3'' wide at the "belt" part, and flared out to 5-6'' at the support part... They trimmed the whole thing to 3'' the whole way, and sanded/pumiced the lenght of it flat... I don't know how well it worked, but I know that it /did/ work.

    Good luck!

    Cheers,
    Jeremy

Give it a try if you want but make sure it is absolutely flat when you pull it taut. I guess any leather will work but you get your hands on an SRD Premium 1 and feel that luxurious leather and it is a world of difference from an ordinary belt leather. I've had an old lifting belt and I know what the are BTW.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

If there's no nicks or cracks, just put it flat on the table and give it a try. If it works you can always cut the desired width, but if it is really old i wouldn't have a heart to cut such fine old thing.
