    Default getting started

so i've been lurking on a number of forums for a few months now, i've switched to wet shaving, and in preparation for the switch to straight razors, i'm making one.

i'm a knife maker, and i can put a "razor edge" on a blade. i fully intend to get this thing shave ready and i'm going to stone to 12000 and all that, but is there anything else vitally important i need to know to get this piece shave ready?

also, are there good videos online, i learn by seeing and i suck at the internet.

    appreciate the help,
    -liam

    Hi Liam,

You really did come to the right place.

Here is a link to the Wiki right here at SRP with honing videos.

Category:Honing - Straight Razor Place Wiki

You should be able to find everything you need to go in the right direction here, and when you supliment that with all of the people willing to help you, life should be very good for you.

I think we would all be very much interested in seeing your completed razor. That is fantastic that you have the skill to make your own.

I have never done what you are asking, and I only recently learned to hone properly from Lynn. So I really am not qualified to contribute any definative data on honing as of yet. Many razors to go before that happens.

Good luck and aks a lot of questions.

    David

    Liam,

SRP offers a DVD for 19.99 that has so much information... including the videos on honing, razor preparation, collecting. shaving... It has a video of Lynn demonstrating a shave... That part was very helpful to me when I got started.. I had the razor and all but I needed a visual as to how to shave... Once I saw the video ... I was able to take a stab at it and had a great first shave.

    good luck...

    Hope this helps..

    Default Getting Started

    Hello, Liam:

Welcome to SRP. Straight razor shaving becomes an obsession — and one of life's great pleasures.

As fellow SRP gentlemen have suggested, please comb the Wiki and other informational avenues here for everything you need. And I, too, recommend Lynn's DVD for being a great teacher and a reference. Of course, you also know this: if you have any questions, please post them. The knowledge our experts have boggles the mind.

We're glad to have you with us.

    Regards,
    Obie

thanks for the info, i think i'll look into that dvd when i've got some spare change right now i'm dead brassers.

i posted the razor over in custom built, figured that was more appropriate. i just kinda patterned it after the most common styles of razors i saw in the forums... now a bunch of my friends want razors and i haven't even finished the first one, i better learn quick..

Spend 30% if your time learning the techniques of honing, and 70% of your time learning to tell the difference between a sharp blade and a wicked sharp blade. Then, use the techniques to achieve the goal.

Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I definitely would like to see the blade when it's finished. Good luck.
