    Default Holding a Str8t

Hello everyone. I am new to this forum and have a couple of questions for you experienced straight shavers. My best friend is buying a straight for me (i currently use a Gillette Tech DE) and I need to learn how to properly HOLD,GRIP, or POSITION the razor in my hand for shaving. I understand from reading this forum what the proper blade angle is but as to gripping the razor...I am clueless. Does anyone have any pics that might be of assistance to me? If so, please post. I greatly appreciate any help any of you can give. Respectfully, Mark

    Welcome to SRP, Mark,

There is an article with about 20 "grips" in the shaving category of the Wiki.

    Regards,
    Robin

    welcome to srp, mark

make sure your friend knows that there's a lot of junk razors out there completely unsuitable for shaving. getting on of them would be a pure waste of money.

    Welcome to SRP, mate

Please see the beginner's guide for information about how. Also see Lynn's "first shave" section in the wiki.

Straight Razor Place Wiki:Books/Beginners Guide - Straight Razor Place Wiki

Unfortunately, factory sharpened razor is considered too dull to shave and best businesses (who know what they are doing) sharpen them before shipping them out. As said in the guides, read up on and mention "shave readiness" to your pal (or not. it might be considered rude), or be prepared to send the razor out for honing...

Welcome Mark and that's one hell of a gift congrats. Like everyone else said look in the wiki. There is no perfect grip imo, the perfect gift is what is most comfortable for you. There is kind of a standard grip ie thumb on bottom, index, middle, and ring finger on top. But in some areas, and direction of shave, the grip needs to be modified. Good luck and enjoy your first razor.

I also highly recommend getting a copy of Lynn's CD. It is a great investment. It contains a treasure trove of information about most all aspects of the straight razor. It includes stropping, honing, face preparation, shaving and general maintenance. It's worth every penny!
