Thread: First SR

Hey all,

So I'm finally ready to purchase my first real SR (I've been using a disposable blade SR) now that I willing to move onto the real stuff I just needed to ask for some help. I've been stalking the classifieds all weekend and have just not come across a good starter razor for under $30. I was wondering if anyone had any razors out there that are good for starters under $30? Im just concerned with the function of the blade, and I understand that for under $30 I wont get to pretty of a scale.

P.S.--If i dont find one can i have some feed back on the Gold Dollar Razor and Filly strop deal on Rup Razor, I might just resort to that. Anyone have any experience with this razor and strop?

I don't think you are going to find good shave ready starter razor for less than $30.00 . If you find one for less than $50.00 , I think you're getting a good deal .

I've seen a $20 and a 25. They're rare but they do come up. I don't recall if shipping was included with them.

I'd say $40-45 is the price point where you can find them regularly on classifieds. If I was looking for a starter razor and all I required was shave ready and good condition, I'd keep it under $55. Anything above that, I'd start to get choosy. There's some quite nice ones on classifieds once you get a little above $100.


Filly strop is generally the recommended starter strop by EVERYONE here.
Why?
Cheap.
Not Cheaply made.
Includes a pasted side, which is quite useful, at the loss of a linen side (which many people don't bother using).

GD razors have a few threads dedicated to them here. As I understand it, they are $5-15 razors from China using decent steel, but with VERY poor quality control. Often times the scales aren't attached well, they don't arrive with a good edge. As I understand it places like ruprazor buy them. Make sure they are in good shape, tighten scales if need be and put a good edge on them.

I'm guessing that the Filly/GD combo is a good starter set, but I'll leave it to someone with experience with it to confirm for you.

i second the motion the the strop/razor combo from ken rup. i have a gold dollar that i had shipped from china. the edge was not in that good of shape. i had to hone and get it in shape before being able to shave.
starting out, the combo from rup razor is a great deal. you have the shave ready razor and strop. when learning to strop you will nick and cut the strop as most of here do and the one in the combo is great for learning. later on you can upgrade to a better strop and later still a better razor. i am sure you will also be like a lot of us here and one razor will become two then three and so on. it is called RAD....good luck

Look in the vendors corner under the gold dollar shipment, jreiter22 is the guy selling them. just got mine and he got it shave ready for me and it only cost me $21 including shipping to Canada. I got the 208 which I think is pretty cool looking for low dough. He has another post the Mystery Post as he is now having the GD's packaged under his own label.

$30-$50 is a good buy. You can't go wrong with one from the classifieds. They are not junk razors. They will be quality items. Afterall, our members have reputations to protect. Please check to see if the razor is shave ready. It will be noted as such in the ad...
