    Default Lathering with a scuttle

I just got myself a scuttle, and am looking at using it but one question eludes me.

Do you store the soap in the top of the scuttle or do you simply build the lather in the top part with the drain holes ?

Do you put soap in the top and leave it in there until its all gone and build a lather on top of it ? Or load the brush with soap and then build a lather in the top bowl ?
And are the drain holes just to get rid of excess water ?

I could not find a video on youtube of someone actually USING a scuttle. Only found ones of bowls in sinks.

I have not yet used any other method yet, just waiting on soap and lather I have ordered to start trying this out.

The top bowl of the scuttle holds your puck of soap. The bottom basin holds your hot water. Dip the bristles of the brush into the basin through the spout and let the brush soak for a few minutes while you attend to other shave preparations (choosing your razor, washing your face, etc). Then, load the brush with soap from the puck for about a minute. The lathering is done on the face when you use a scuttle, and in my experience it requires a little more patience. The holes in the top portion of the scuttle could be for drainage (though the soap seems to block them) or to aid in heating/softening the soap from below.

That's a nice scuttle, good luck with it.

I think that you will find the answer to your question in this video: YouTube - The Luxury of Warm Lather

The type of scuttle in your pictures is not designed to lather in it, it just keeps a small brush and soap warm.

    Thanks for the info.

Now, That I have soap for it. Do you just leave the soap in the top until it is used up ? Or take it out every or after so many uses/clean things up ? Or store the scuttle in something.. Or leave the scuttle with soap just on the bathroom counter ?

    Hi Charon.

I'm fairly new to this game but I am using a similar scuttle (nice scuttle BTW), and have had the best luck by using the top portion (as mentioned by Alraz) just for keeping the lathered brush warm and moist.

It was suggested to me to lather the brush in a SEPERATE CUP and use the top of the scuttle simply for resting the lathered brush during the shave.

Lay the lathered bristles over the holes, the steam from the reservoir will rise up through the holes and it will indeed keep your lathered brush warm and moist for the entire shave. Give it a try.

You can STORE the puck in the top after use, probably a good place for it.
