Thread: Restoration Question

So I found a straight Razor on ebay. Its stamped J.A. Henckels Solingen.

I got the razor for $10.00 which I thought was a decent deal.

The blade is sharp, but a has a serious curve to it.

I am wondering if I should send it to a classified member to hone it for me, or if I should just spend the money to get a different razor and wait till I can afford to buy stones and hone this one myself. Especially since 3 honing stones are about 1/5 of the cost of having one razor honed.

HI and welcome, the razor is going to have to be worked on with someone with a lot of experience to get it shave ready. look in the classifieds here and i am sure you will find someone to get up to speed for you. vintage razors make great shavers, many are better than the new straights made today...good luck

Not sure who quoted you a price on honing a razor, but typically it cost $20 for a basic honing plus shipping back to you. Restoration can cost more, but it really depends on how much you want it restored.

I bought a set of Norton stones recently that included a 250, 1,000, 4,000, and 8,000 grit stones plus a lapping stone. The set was about $116 with free shipping from amazon.com. I think you have the prices backward in your post.

Indeed I do have the prices backwards....good catch!

As for how far I want it restored, just getting it shave worthy would be perfect for me.
I am just looking to start shaving with a straight.

I got "the filly" strop on the way, and a vanderhagen soap set.

Being a college student, the bottom line can be the difference between a week of Ramen vs. steak, and salads!
