Thread: honing stones and lapping

I have a 1k stone an a 4000/8000 norton combo. Can I use the 1k to do the lapping on the 4/8 stone ?

i also have the 4000/8000 and what i did was take another stone which just happen to be a 1000 and i wrapped it with 600 grit water sandpaper and it worked ok. i have honed several razors and got a great edge..

600 grit wet/dry paper is what Norton says to use . I use it and it works fine , for me . Lay the paper on a hard , flat surface , and move the hone in a figure "8" pattern on the paper , using plenty of water .

I have the same hones and use the 1000 to perform a light/refresh lapping before each honing session. The purpose is to remove any built up swarf/junk on the hone and present a fresh cutting surface.

For heavier lapping use sandpaper, as mentioned, use with a pencil grid, or a DMT 325 grit diamond plate.

Eventually the 1000 will need a heavy lapping on sandpaper/diamond.

I already use the send paper like you all said. What I want to know is if I can use the 1000 stone instead the send paper to do the lapping on the 4/8k stone.

Only for a lite "refresh" lapping.

My two concerns would be:
a) grit contamination
b) what if your 1k is not flat itself?

But there will be not a contamination with a sand paper too ?

There will be if you lap too aggresively- but the bigger issue then is grits break off and scratch the hone. My issue with two stones being rubbed is they have the same bonding agent so they would *possibly* wear equally fast. Which is why I would be concerned and haven't tried it myself. I feel sandpaper (the better brands at least) is bonded more permanently- after all it is not designed to generate slurry/be lapped.

Well, sensible. But I could say that I can achieve a Finest laping usin a 1000 sotone then a 600 paper. Make sense ?
