I go up to 1200 paper but yeah. Your thinking is correct. I guess I would lap the 1k on a flat surface with sandpaper, and maybe finish lapping the 4k/8k on the 1k, but I would still be cautious.

I have been using the Norton 1000 to refresh lap my Norton 4/8 for a couple of years. There is no cross contamination. Just rinse the 4/8 under running water and rub with a brush or your hand to remove any loose particles.
I have never had any embedded particles from either the 1000 Norton or from any sandpaper. But... I do not use a lot of pressure and I do not use poor quality sandpaper.

However, there have been a number of people who have experienced abrasive particles from sandpaper becoming embedded in the Norton 4/8 so be sure to check the hone with a spare razor or knife blade first.

Thanks, in fact I was not happy with the results of lapping with a 600 sandpaper. I could even feel on my fingers some surface imperfections on the 8000k after 600 sand paper lapping.

Thanks for clearing that up. The only issue I've had with Sandpaper was too much pressure, and only with a Swaty. Since then I use a lot less pressure. Good to know that hones don't cross contaminate- I was very worried about that.

Not quite the same situation, but I use a DMT1200 to lap my BBW & coticule... works great.
