    Talking 'Nother new guy

    Hey all, just completed my first straight razor shave, and didn't slice my head off. I took the advice from here and bought a couple of shave ready razors from altima55 on ebay. I've been using a DE for a couple of months now, so the sting wasn't there. I was a bit nervous putting that blade to my face so it skipped a little, spent about 30 minutes and three passes to build up confidence enough to hold it and not let it skip. I haven't bought a strop yet so I'll be looking for suggestions on here, until I get one my DE will suffice. I'm thinking it should be stropped before every shave.

    Welcome to SRP and congratulations. The WIKI holds the key to most questions about anything str8 razor. Your razor should be stroped before and after each shave. Just search the WIKI for Strop and you'll get the picture. Scroll down at this site and you'll see a section called What Strop To Choose This should give you a better picture about strops.

    Welcome! I remember about a month after I bought my first razor, I went back to the store where I bought it and the guy behind the counter said he was surprised I wasn't dead!

    Welcome to SRP. I used a DE to finish my chin, mustache and a couple of problem areas for my first couple of weeks. It would take me so long in the beginning that the lather would dry up on one side before I completed the other. I would have to rinse and relather to finish.

    Within a couple of weeks I put the DE away and haven't touched it since and it was smooth shaving from there on out. Here is the beginner's section in the SRP Wiki with a tutorial by SRP founder Lynn Abrams on the first straight razor shaves.
    Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

    The wiki is great for newbies that need to find an answer FAST,

    I will also recommend the Tony Miller Strops, great quality and a nice guy too.
