    Default new here

Hello my name is Vinnie and I started DE shaving a couple of weeks ago and today i will have my first straight in my hands as soons as the USPS gets here. Wet shaving has been a great change from cartridge shaving and I'm sure I am going to love straight shaving.

    Welcome Vinnie!

Let us know what you're using for soaps/creams, brushes and razors. We're always interested in that kind of thing.

Ive been using WARS cream and C.O. Bigelow cream as well. I have not tried a soap yet but should be ordering soe at the end of the week along with a filly strop. For DE Ive been using a Gillette Old and a Merkur HD razor with Derby and Astra blades of which I like the Astra blades better.

Hi Vinnie, welcome to SRP! First, what kind of razor are you getting? Second, did you purchase it, shave ready? I'm just asking to make sure you didn't end up with an inferior razor and a dull one. Also, even if your razor arrives shave ready, you're going to need the strop around your second or third shave. Hope your first shave goes well. Take it slow and have fun.

The razor is shave ready It is a Geneva straight. I plan on following the advice given here and just shaving from the sideburn down on one side then finishing with my DE for the first time then i won't touch it again until i get my strop but i had to at least try it that first time LOL. I will try it this afternoon before i go in to work. After i get some time with the straight under my belt I will save some money and order a Dovo or something new nice so I have a vintage and a new blade. The Le Grulet's look beautiful but i think they may be in short supply now not sure.

Welcome to SRP Vinnie and good luck with your first razor and shave. The learning curve is a bit less if you've already got the preparation and lathering end of it down with the DE shaving.

You're smart to take it slow in the beginning as Lynn suggests. I finished my chin and mustache areas with a DE for my first couple of weeks with the straight. Once I got past that I put the DE away for good and it has been smooth shaving since.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
