    Default Steelex 1200 Grit

Hi Is anyone familiar with the Steelex D1069 1200 Grit Japanese Waterstone?

Amazon.com: Steelex D1069 1200 Grit Japanese Waterstone: Home & Garden

Would it be a waste of money to get this?

    Thanks

    Graham

I don't think so you will have waste of money. you can use it for many purposes. including setting bevel.

i haven't seen anybody posting on using it, but i'd assume it'll work. i'd still go with one of the honed people here use just because when you start asking questions like 'why doesn't my razor get sharp, I've been honing for 5 hour' the people that help you would know what the hone you're using does.

as far as using it on razors you'll typically need two more hones in addition to this to make a razor shave well.

To clarify a bit more of what gugi said, 1200 grit is not going to be nearly fine enough for a razor. Most people will start at 4000 grit and go up from there on a new razor. If the edge is messed up, or the bevel is shot, then 1000-1200 grit is pretty useful for rough work, but you won't get much of a shaving edge from that stone.
