    Default I blame you all...!

    Hi folks,

My names Stuart and I am an addict. I've been straight shaving for a few months now and I`m finding this whole world fascinating and great fun! I love that shaving is no longer a brainless "chore" for me and I look forward to shaving each morning now. Plus I get the smoothest ever shaves with no irritation and I get to go out and buy loads of great kit (because I need it, I keep telling SWMBO... Not sure she believes it!) and herein lies my problem.

At this very moment, I have about a half dozen internet windows open with a variety of items in baskets ready to be purchased. Theres the set of Naniwa hones, DMT hone and diamond paste over at SRD (not got any hones yet so I do need some!) and dont forget the red latigo strop as well! Sweet! Theres the Tabac soap over at shavemac which I'd love to try coz I've heard good things about it. Theres the Rooney silvertip brush over at Charles Nicholls, which I need coz I only have a best badger at the moment. Oh, and theres the Thiers Issard 5/8" Flying Tudor Rose with snakewood scales at classicshaving. Not to mention the constant eBay browsing going on on the BlackBerry (work blocks eBay so I have to use the phone..!).

I can justify buying ALL of this stuff for a variety of reasons (though I am leaning towards the hones as thats the only thing I dont have at the moment) so, I suppose, the crux of the matter is that I blame you all for getting me hooked and theres no way on earth I`m going to "de-tox" as I`m having far too much fun...! Plus now I want to start restoring blades as well, and I've got my first one to do..! So theres another opportunity to make blade holders, buy tools and generally have some fun..!

Guess I'll just have to go and ask the bank for a loan or something...!

Anyways, what I`m saying is thanks very much to all of you, to Lynn and to Don, the moderators and mentors and everyone else at SRP and SRD for the great site, the friendly advice and a whole new hobby/ addiction!

    Cheers!

    Hi Stubear,

The only way to overcome the various addictions is to buy a bunch of stuff and give it away. In the interest of saving your sanity, you can go ahead and send everything you mentionend in your post above to MY address. PM me and I'll make sure you get it.

By the way, since they cost me an arm and a leg to buy over here, can you send some Jaffa Cakes along with the shipment? Yet another addiction *I'm* having to battle...

This place is full of addicts of all kinds, Welcome to the club.

If for some reason you feel that you need to break this addiction please see the following:

There was a 12 step program developed at one time. But no one seemed to be willing to attend. Nor to run the meetings either

So the only was would be to have an intervention where several of the senior members would need to show up at your house. Tie you up and remove all shaving items from your house, replacing it with a cart razor and a can of goo. We would then need to block all internet acess and place holds on all your credit cards so that any purchase would need to be reviewed before it was processed.

So, if you really feel the need for the community to get involved I am sure there are a few members that would not mind removing your shave gear and donate it to another needy newbie, Just let us know.

    Welcome to SRP Stubear,

De-tox for this type of addiction is costly and time consuming. The easiest way to beat it is not to fight it. Take responsibility for your own actions and intrests and even though it may get worse before it gets better you will at least have the privledge to say "yes, these are mine, care to see how they work?" Whatever else enjoy, have fun, and just continue to learn. Don't forget the WIKI here there is so much good information in it and if it doesn't answer your question most likely someone here can. Good luck with your addiction and again welcome.

Haha! Yeah, I might just have to go cold turkey! Its the only way out I can see...! But then I would end up with a beard you could hide a badger in and I so much prefer to be clean shaven..! As for the Bic+gunk idea, thats like driving a Porsche and then going to an FSO Polonez..!

But I am loving the experience! Straight razors and strops look so much better than some plastic, 17 bladed item from Sainsburys! Or a bad full of disposable plastic tat! I`m not sure if its the same in the US, but in the UK you can buy a bag of about 25 bic razors for around £3 or something. Thats hardly going to be a pleasure to use..!

Plus one of the fun things about a new hobby is buying all the kit..! Just got to convince my girlfriend that I really really need some hones! Shes very supportive actually, shes off to Chicago in a few weeks and has promised to go antique-ing and find me a razor or two..! And she got home late last night and I was watching Lynns DVD, so she just sat and watched it with me. She had a few questions about honing afterwards though... I'll have to direct her to this site..!

    Thanks again guys!

I would just say to buckle your seat belt and enjoy the ride , It's a great "hobby" and this is a great place to keep up to date on the latest and greatest of what is available for the wet shavers.

Your girlfriend is more than welcome to stop in, we have a great group of ladies here that would be happy to have her join in .

Believe it or not, I can GET those. For some reason the grocers that are willing to stock many of the British goodies I like just don't see a market in the Jaffa Cakes. But PG Tips, Digestives, Ribena, Woodpecker Cider, etc., can be found without much hassle.

Sorry for the hijack... Back on topic!

    Sorry, one last hiijack!

Can you get Marmite? I was told by an American friend that its very unpopular in the US...! I made her try some and you'd have thought I'd given her earwax or something for the fuss she made about it..! Hehe! So, is Marmite popular across the pond?
