Thread: Free Shaving Kit

Hi All,

I’m preparing a starter set as a PIF to a new member who does not have the resources to acquire the items needed to get started. Though most of the items in the kit aside from the razor would not be considered “premium”, they are more than enough to get a person started and allow them to experience, with practice, a better shave than can be had with one of those multi-bladed disposable monstrosities.

I am ashamed to say that I had received the razor and strop as a PIF from Nickelking over a year ago, and it’s taken me this long to get the razor re-honed and ready to pass on. To prevent the ill-will of the razor gods and to promote good karma I am repenting of my laziness and passing on the razor to another newbie. The kit consists of a Dovo Renaissance that has just been honed by Utopian, a Tony Miller practice strop (the thong broke so it needs to be replaced), a used but disinfected VDH boar brush and bowl, and a container of Mama Bear’s Beau Brummel shaving soap. The winner should only need to add his/her choice of after shave to have a fully stocked kit. All I ask is that you pay for shipping.

This PIF will be conducted in a similar manner to the one started by StraightRazorDave in an earlier thread. I'd link to it, but I'm having HTML difficulties. The rules are similar, but not the same. I plan to give the set to a random person who replies to this thread and who meets the following qualifications:

1) Has joined the forum after June 1, 2009
2) Owns one or less razors
3) Will promise to pass on the razor and strop once they have acquired a replacement
4) Writes a 1-2 sentence reason why they would like to receive the kit.
5) Is willing to pay the cost of shipping the Priority Mail box to their address

As stated above, the person to receive the kit will be randomly selected. I’m going to have my wife and oldest daughter read the responses and choose the winner to take me out of the selection process. I’ll print all responses the evening of August 16 and plan to post a winner on August 17. Please understand if there’s a delay as life tends to throw a wrench in the works at times. However, the box is packed, at my desk and ready to ship when the winner is chosen.

Thanks to everyone on this forum for the encouragement, advice and support as I have learned how to shave with a straight. I am constantly overwhelmed at seeing the generosity and support shown here on a regular basis.

Two or three days ago I was the "winner" of a great PIF- a few members joined forces to surprise me with hones. I am really really touched by their gesture, it makes a big difference to me and I hope to do my own PIF soon. You're a great guy for doing this. A RENAISSANCE? Some newbie is gonna be VERY happy.

I would like to receive this kit because, I really want a traditional str8 and cannot, currently afford one. Also, if I don't I will not know the feel of a traditional str8 until after the new year, currently I own a straightee that I snap DE blades in half for, depending on whether or not anyone gets me one for b-day or x-mas.
I will, definitely, pass it on to other newbies who cannot afford it, as soon as I can get my own stuff.
As for the shipping, how much would it be to ship it to Logan, UT? That may disqualify me.

Again, the razor started as a PIF sometime in the clouded past and is destined to be passed from newb to newb. I didn't buy it, I'm just passing it on. It's a nice blade, but it's obvious that it's used. The text on the scales is almost worn off and the scales bow inward, making it necessary to be c-a-r-e-f-u-l when closing the blade. Still, it provides a great shave and is a pleasure to use.

After this I will stop spamming up the thread and let the newer newbies post.

NEWBIES! If you are eligible, APPLY! I would do terrible, terrible, medieval (lol) things in order to get a free Renaissance, even if you do have to pass it on. My ugliest blade is my second or third favourite shaver (of 7). Doesn't matter if the scales are broken off... that blade is a great way to start.

The kit is to be shipped in a medium flat-rate Priority Mail box, so the cost for shipping is $10.35 anywhere in the US. If, by chance, the lovely ladies choose someone that's not located in the US, we'll need to work out the shipping after the name is drawn. I'll pass on my Paypal information once we work out details.

US Shipping is easier for me, but I don't mind international shipping. I just need to fill out a few customs forms. Please be aware, however, that the customs agents in another country may want to charge additional fees for these items, even if they are considered a gift.

joined yesterday ,
do not own any razor, or even basic item needed for razor shaving.
I do however have Japanese knives and can appreciate what sharp means(you have to see how clean shaved my fore arm is its my test pad for blade sharpness ).
I am tired of bar 3/4/5 blade gilette razors, and definitely do not feel like getting an electric shaver , those are such a pain to clean..

Hmmm. It appears that there's either too little interest or the qualifiers are too strict for this PIF. Normally there's lots of activity on something like this after a few hours have passed.

If there's not more people posting interest I'll expand the eligibility to span two months. Let me know if my thinking is misguided.

evening folks! I am new to the SRP, I am a collector of antique straights and safetys, I attempt to shave with a straight, but am embarrassed somewhat to say, it isn't the awesome experience i see you seasoned folk talk about, but I am persistant. I own a thousand or so vintage razors some from the early 1800's. I have a 2003 CaseXX Green bone in my med cab i have used a little, any views on that? How do these WR Case Commemoratives rate in the real Straight razor world?

oh, i have just discovered the Sweeney todd collectibles, and am working to assemble a 7day set using the prop box, but I now wonder if this box will even accomidate the sharp 7"closed razors I have to fill them, the props with boxes are on thier way. I bought them compulsively and only now am trying to get info on them, but to no avail.
