    Default Scale number ?

I only have one straight razor (for now!) - a Puma 4/8 88 Special. On the end of the scale near the pivot, the numbers 4 8 1 (although it could be a 7) are embedded in the material. What do those numbers mean?

Just a guess, but at one time, many customers of large Barber shops would leave their razor at the shop so as to always be shaved with your own razor for health reasons.I can envision a wall of cubbyholes all numbered (maybe up to 500?)and your razor in number 481 and the same number stamped or melted into the razor itself.

blades could be 3/8,4/8,5/8 .......8/8 etc. size of the blade.how wide is it?
88 means Puma's number. they go 1,87,88,89 etc.
481 i think if am not mistake should be on the handle.
    hope this helps

Yes Bud, it is an 88 4/8, but the 4 8 1 is hand stamped on the scale at the pivot end, not etched on the blade.

Where in MO, BTW? Wentzville here.
