Thread: Greetings from New Zealand newbee shaver

Hi Everyone, Mike here frm Wairaapa, New Zealand. Totally new to the straight shave,,,got sick of the Mach 3 etc crap,,,face felt like had been attacked by a lawnmower,,ought a new Dovo 5/8 razor and a Dovo Leather/canvas strop. Watched some posts on youtube re shaving and decided to giveit a go,,,,I now realize thatmy razor wasn't shave ready.....tried stropping it bt not much better...obviously it needs to be honed....anyone from New Zealand who knows where i can get that done...as istill got a half decent shave...but notice the razor does not feel smooth... realize i'm hooked onto the straight,

thanks for that..yep either get somone to hone it..or learn to do it myself..have read quite bit on honing..so do have some idea..will order lyn's dvd

Hey Mike, greetings from Dunedin. There was a bloke from Oz on here a short while ago offering free honing, trying to find the thread right now as I have a Heljestrand frameback that needs a honing. Will add the thread when I find it, but if I can't, anyone in the "member services" part of the classifieds can hone it for you.
Depending on where you bought the Dovo from though, it may have come shave-ready and it might just be your angles and pressure making it not smooth. Where'd you get it from?

I use a cutthroat and like many others, I have a small collection of them. I get great satisfaction from using them, but I often use a DE razor for convenience, especially away from home.

One thing always puzzles me, I've never shaved with a Mach 3 but have used a Sensor Excel, which gave a perfectly good shave. I've never worked out how you could feel like you've been attacked by a mower. On the other hand you can abuse your face quite easily with a cutthroat, and your fingers too, if you don't concentrate.

Perhaps Mach 3s and the like are usually accompanied by aerosol shaving foam, whereas one's first use of a cutthroat is often with a decent brush and soap.

Interesting, didn't realise there were any shops in NZ selling new razors. How much did it cost you, and did they have any other razors than Dovos? Might be interested in getting another razor for my growing collection when I next have some cash.

You might have to send that bad boy to Auz!
