Thread: First Straight Razor Shave

Received my first razor today that I bought in the classifieds from Seraphim (sp). It was a 13/16 DA with a worked back. Other than the gash on my left cheek that bled for an hour it went pretty well for the first time! Thanks to everyone on here who helped me get started....I'm already addicted.

Congrats on getting started. It will become easier every time you shave , but there are a couple of things that will help you along the way.
First of all TAKE YOUR TIME!!! Never under estimate that razor in your hand. Use a very light hand when making a pass and let the razor do the work. With a well honed razor there is no need for any pressure.
Secondly, it is recommended to start of learning to shave on one part of your face. i.e. do not do a full shave when learning. Shave the sides of your face which are easier and master that. Get comfortable doing all your passes there before you move on to shaving your chin and mustache. With some practice and patience, BBS shaves are around the corner. Enjoy!

Meanwhile, until you get the styptic, you can use very cold water splashed on your face (your tap might be cold enough, or maybe some refrigerated or ice water) to help stop the bleeding. Do this when the shave is all complete, though.

Congrats on staying with it. 1 hour bleed - Yikes. I started with a very sharp and unforgiving straight blade that had a sharp spike point. Despite all the weepers and cuts, I just used cold water and TP/pressure to cure it all. I have the S-pens, but they are just collecting just. Tried them once and thought I could do a better job with the TP, cold water and pressure. Perhaps I just have thick blood which makes it all easier to manage.
