I had a similar reaction to Vergulde Hand soap. I guess I'm allergic to one of the ingredients. I haven't found out what ingredient, but I intend to find out.

    Keep on keeping on.
I presume you VDH, for Van der Hagen. It's made in Liberty Hill, Texas, about 50 miles NE of Austin. One of the largest suppliers of specialty soaps around, and generally of high quality. (I wouldn't be surprised if they export to China!) They supply the soaps for Col. Conk, for instance.
However, some recipes just contain stuff that some individuals are sensitive to. Mama Bear, The Shave Den, Coleen, Honey Bee Spa, and others have lots of good soaps, some of which are especially formulated for sensitive skin, and which aren't quite as expensive as D. R. Harris. The Arko shave sticks and various Arko creams from Turkey are good lather-makers and inexpensive, see www.tulumba.com.
