Thread: American razors?

I'm new to the SR world, having re-discovered the 1960's-era Gillette double-edged razors a few months back--a dramatic improvement over what's currently available on store shelves. Right now I'm using a boar bristle brush and shaving soap. Great results, but I would like to experience the SR shave, especially since my late father was, himself, a barber and used straights and DE's himself at one time. I have been doing some reading in preparation, and I really appreciate the Newbies corner, especially the post about what razors to avoid. It's appreciated when more experienced members take time to share their knowledge to help those of us new to the SR world. Question: Are there any current American manufacturers offering reasonably priced razors? I know about Zowada, but doesn't he primarily sell a very expensive Damascus steel product?

Joe Chandler, "Butch" Harner, Robert Williams, Frank Warner, Josh Earl... these guys all produce custom razors.. Also Alex/philadeplh and Charlie/spazola make razors... I think Randydance is just about ready too he has been showing off some nice stuff lately...

You forgot Bill Ellis, but he has a list to get on the list to get a razor and last I heard it was closed.

but yeah, the only three large manufacturers that produce straight razors are dovo, thiers issard, and boker. perhaps the double arrows from china can be counted in too, but i don't consider them ground well enough to deserve the name 'razor'.

Guys, I think that smooth would better benefit from some recommendations of on-line stores. Since I do not have the information that he needs I am not going to attempt an aswer. However, I will say that smooth probably should start off with a razor that his pop left to him, if its still around. If its not around I always recommend that folks look for something that looks like and acts like the one his pop used. My own pop used a great 70s model double edge for years before throwing it in the garbage rather than clean it. Two years ago I gave him another that is an exact twin, hopefully he has used that one since it looks, acts and behaves like the one that he knew for years. My family have used double edge razors for the past sixty years, some decades before I arrived on the seen and before that straights. Since the striaghts were long gone decades before I arrived, I have no way of knowing what was around back then and what they used.
