Thread: Worth it?

What are your guys thoughts? ($28 inc. shipping?) I know it needs some maas and definately a hone... but I heard somewhere that salamanders are somehow related to the fabled green lizard... and also, its a solingen blade in not so bad condition.

i havent heard of salamander, which isnt saying much..
if this is gonna be a first razor, i would say get somethin Alot nicer for an extra 10 or 20 bucks...

is it sellable.. probably, but i dont think anyone is like jumping up and down to get it...

if you got shave ready razors already and just want restore project than just use your discretion.

We try to avoid "is it worth it" kinds of questions. But nobody could answer that for you anyway.

The value of any vintage item is determined by how much it's worth to the individual, not a formula.

So the question really is, "is it worth it to you?"

Is $28 pocket change for you, or something to think seriously about?

Compare it to some of the razors in the classified, which are a great way to buy a razor if you don't want to buy new. Compare that to how much it will take to get shave ready, and how much you personally like the razor.

How hard will it be to get into "shave ready" condition? It's hard to say from the photo, but it looks like the bevel is badly rusted, which means taking off a lot of metal to set a new edge. So, it's probably something that would need to be sent out to a pro.

I have a somewhat shave ready razor... an ebay misadventure that a member graciously tried to hone for me... didn't work out too well according to him, to me it feels ten times better than before, but in other news, I am looking around for another, either as a replacement or as a start to a rotation.

ahh ok, then no id try to get something advertised as shave ready..
might take a night of patient searching or an extra 20 tacked on to that price, but it would make the world of difference

well how much do you want to gamble?
it would be poor, mediocre, or good shaver. you wouldn't know until you have it honed. add the costs of honing and shipping (even if somebody does it for you for free it still takes the same amount of time and effort) and then you have more realistic comparison of the final costs.

You wont know what its worth until you clean her up and get her honed. The Green Lizard was made by Cattaraugus Cutlery Co., Little Valley New York. Salamanders do have a good reputation.
