    Default hook for hanging strop

I am going to put a hook on my bathroom wall to use for stropping (a 3 inch strop from SRD). I haven't stropped my razor yet and I want to know what height is optimal for attaching a hanging strop before I give it my first try. Does anyone have advice for me?

I believe this is a hotly debated topic.... and I'm sure more folks with more experience will chime in... try a google search of straight razor place? While I currently am speaking from ignorance and not having a hook of my own I believe the two most accepted heights are about even with the navel or with the nipples on your pectorals? Someone will surely correct me if I'm wrong but perhaps try to get a feel for both and see which is more comfy?

Since I'm very short sighted, I like the hand helds.
I guess I'd attach the hook at a height where I can see the surface best.

I'd start somewhere around between doorknob and towel bar height. Then, start very slow, and pay close attention to what is comfortable. There is no right or wrong answer here, except that it needs to be at a height where you can strop comfortably and consistently.

After 6 months of working at it, I'm finally getting up to speed with stropping (but now I'm ready for a hone...). I started out with the strop attached to the towel bar, and am pretty comfortable with it at that height (but, I'm 6' tall and lanky).

I think "muscle memory" plays some part here. If you start out at one angle, you probably don't want to change that once you've gotten used to it. I've gotten into a back-and-forth motion, while others prefer a side-to-side motion. You make the call!

Start slowly and find out what's comfortable for you. Also, start with a practice razor and a practice strop. I'm almost ready to get a really good strop, myself (well, maybe a few months away just yet... the occasional nicks still happen when I start to think too hard while stropping).

That's a doozie.. I do it about chest-height, I think Lynn keeps it fairly low (IIRC it might have even been waist high) and IIRC X kept it ape-hanger high... Different stokes for different folks. Before you start screwing in the hook, try to hang it from different heights and see what feels most comfortable to you.

try attaching it to the doornob first and see how you like that and then you will know if you want it higher or lower
