yes, this is a common misconception.
it's not very easy to kill yourself with a straight razor, and accidentally killing yourself seems pretty close to impossible to me.

my best advice to you would be to check the two sticky posts at the top of this section and in particular the links in mine.

14 is the best time to start

    Welcome Dre,
Check out all the info in the Wiki, Link at the top bar. There are also great threads in the archives here to read up on.

I have no doubt you can shave your sideburns and give yourself some straight lines with a straight razor. It just takes time and practice. Go slow at first and give the razor respect.

    Good luck.

First, a hearty welcome to SRP. As already advised, take your time. Like many other things in life it takes a bit of time to develop skills, and straight razor shaving is no different. Respect, don't fear your razor. If you fear it you aren't going to relax enough to get your angles and pressures right. Err on the side of too little pressure and a shallower angle at the start. As you gain experience and confidence those will come. Don't worry about a BBS for awhile. Just relax and enjoy.

Welcome to SRP Dre! The most important thing
is that you get your razor sharpened by one of
the honemeisters here. It is dangerous to
    shave with a dull blade.
