Thread: noob's razor needs honing - edmonton

hey everybody, my name's marcus and i've been shaving with a straight for a couple of months now. after reading up here on srp about how "shave-ready" from the manufacturer is not necessarily shave-ready from a shaving standpoint, when i got my razor (a dovo bismarck) for christmas, i couldn't wait to try it out and threw caution to the wind.

anyways, i've been stropping the blade before and after shaving every time, but i can't help but notice that the blade has gotten pretty dull. so far i haven't chopped my face to bits or anything, but i certainly haven't been trying to shave bbs either. at this point i'm thinking i just need to get this blade honed, but i live in edmonton, alberta, and don't want to have to pay for massive shipping fees to get the blade honed by someone in the states. the other thing is that it is my only razor, and i don't want to go without shaving for the weeks it will take for me to get it back.

so here's the question: can anyone suggest some reasonable alternatives to shipping the razor to the states? is there anyone with honing expertise in alberta? could i try taking the razor to a knife store or a barber or something? anyways, long post. thanks for your patience!

DONT take your razor to a knife sharpener
There are a few guys in canada that hone ST8S
on this site im sure they will read this post and PM you.
Most honers will get the razor back to you as quick as they can ,
but I have read a few horror stories about sending to the local knife sharpening gent.

as far as i know dan is not doing it currently, but it's great to see scott stepping in to help.

i should also point out that 1st class mail is inexpensive, for a razor internationally it costs at most a dollar more than domestically. the time is usually 5-10 days each way.

I wont be of any help on your honing quest but that seems to be solved..

While you wait to get your razor honed you could try a DE in the meantime or a Shavette.. I used a shavette if I didn't have a shaveready razor at hand and that worked pretty well for me. I also have a DE for when I'm just in a hurry or want to spend my time on something else. They all work great for me and wont break the bank.

I was unsatisfied with my choices in Toronto! The classifieds here are a great place to land great shavers and other gear too. You might find a decent men's shop or two around town though if you look. Downtown? West Ed?
