Thread: I finally found a way to enjoy shaving

New here, wanted to say hello. I always hated shaving, my face would burn and hurt, so i went out on the net to find a better way and that led me here. I kinda jumped in with both feet, bought a Monsieur Charles disposeable blade about 2 weeks ago and did a full shave with it first try. No bad cuts thanks to the great info I found ehre, but did get some razor burn in the normal place, not as bad but was there. A quick search on this site and I learned I was using a little too much pressure, problem solved and I had the best shave ever the next day, no razor burn, awesome. This is so much fun I wish I could shave 2-3 times a day, hehe.

Well, I shaved for a whole 3 days before I got bit by the bug. I was talking to my grandfather about shaving with the straight and he gave me his grandfather old straight razor, has his initials scratched in the scales. I ordered the norton 1000/4000 and 4000/8000 hones and began reading everything i could about honing and restoring an old razor. I am very thrilled to say this morning I got to shave with my great great grandfathers stright razor and that was just an outstanding feeling to me.

Thanks for the great information/education guys and especially for turning the most dreaded part of my morning into something i enjoy and look forward to.

that is great! i was another one who hated shaving prior to the straight razor. i have since used a DE and i don't mind them, but the SR is for me. i have the same set up as far as hones and really like them. any pictures of the razor?

Welcome. I have hated shaving for years. Started with a Sensor excel, moved from there to mach 3, and later fusion. On and off for the last 10 years I have grown the beard, sometimes to mountain man proportions because I hated it so. Started using a DE last year; much better, was starting to enjoy shaving, but it just wasn't enough. Switched to straights two weeks ago. Will NEVER look back. Congrats on the heirloom. I could not even get an old DE from any of my relatives, most haven't used one in ages, and I don't think anyone in my family is in possession of a straight. This forum is awesome. I spend more time on here than any other website. Keep reading and keep enjoying.

I will get some pics soon, trying to get a picture of my great great grandfatherso I can make a glass display case for this razor with his photo. The razor is stamped John Weis on one side and C.S.P.K trademark on the other. Is this a pretty good razor? Even after sitting in a cigar box for 70+ years it still had a good edge on it, would shave hair off my arm, and I have it sharp enough to shave now, but it does pull just a little so not quite there. I think it will be a good shaver once I learn to get a sharper edge on it.

Ok, now this has been so great for me to have an heirloom like this I want to get a nice razor and get it personalized so hopefully someone in my family will be shaving with it in a hundred years. I was thinking of getting the dovo Bizmark in bone handles, then getting Semper Fi and my name engraved on the handles, maybe laser engraved unless there is a better way. I was thinking of trying to get a scrimshaw like look. I will try to attach photos I made to give you and idea of what I am thinking of, but they are both of the same side of a razor. What would be the best way to get a nice scrimshaw type look, laser engraving or is there some other technique maybe a jewelry store can do? I never had anything engraved before.
