Thread: expense for a beginner?...

The initial set up is certainly not as cheap as a free fusion, but it's reasonable. You don't need hone, you need your razor to be honed by somebody who has experience doing it. There are many places online, you'd want to shop at one of the good ones.
The wiki is a nice place to start, as well as reading some of the threads in this section. You'll get the idea fairly quickly and be able to avoid the common mistakes.

Anyway, one final question before I do my own research, does anyone have the Geo F Trumper brochure?. I had it and have lost it . Is there something near the back saying straight razor shaving isnt recommended for a particular skin type???.

That is very good advise

I just went through some of the same thought process. I did not want to make a big investment if I was not sure if straight shaving was for me. I ended up buying a razor and strop from ruprazor.com. I believe the owner is a member. I bought a wapienica blade for $58 and a starter strop for $20.

I bought from a reputable seller, who was good with responding questions, and received a "shave ready" razor and what seems to be a good quality starter strop for $78. I already had all the other "stuff" from shaving with a DE. To me, that was a pretty good price to get started with some quality gear.

There are other vendors such as ruorazor.com that I am sure would be just as good and you can find some recommendations in the forums.

As for the shaving, it has been a slow but steady improvement. I think my issues are caused by technique and not by the equipment.
