Default Newbie Breakthrough - Thanks All, was a Team Effort

I'm the guy who, after my first attempt, was going to toss in the towell and my shave things and give it up. Really glad I didnt. Today was shave 7, and my second all SR shave, sans touch-up. The initial efforts, the good posts, Wiki, and your encouraging and informative comments were invaluable. I am actually enjoying waking early for the shave ritual. Best to all.

Hi Jim. Good job with staying with it. Although straight razor shaving may not be for everyone, there's no denying the satisfaction gained with a straight razor shave. As you've already discovered it's not a race, and that you need to develop skills not used with other types of shaving. Plus, when you shave with a straight razor you are essentially shaving with a new razor everytime due to the stropping and other maintenance. What drove me to straights was the fact that my disposable blades were inconsistent in sharpness, even when they were new. Now I don't have to worry about that. Some simple blade maintenance ensures a consistently sharp blade each shave. And I'll let you in on a little secret of mine. After 7 months of straight razor shaving I still touch up with my Merkur twin.

That's good to hear! Glad you managed to get over the initial frustrations. There may be times when you wonder if it's worth it in the coming months, but if you stick with it you'll be glad you did!

Glad to hear that str8 shaving is starting to work well for you. I shave in the evening and get to enjoy my shaves more. You may find evening shaving works better for you also, at least until you can do it w/o concentrating on every movement. Good luck w/ future shaves.

I've switched over to evenings, too, Joed. It's nice to have the relaxation time to unwind and enjoy a shave before retiring. Since I shave every day (evening), and it's always BBS, my face still gets lit up with razor burn. The fact that I'm shave testing blades every night doesn't help much, either. Shaving in the evening and following it up with an alum block pass really helps the razor burn look better by the following morning.
