Thread: New Guy here (looking for a Razor)

Hey SRP,

I've been reading the Wiki and posts here for awhile now, and I want to try my luck shaving with a Straight Razor.
Im having troubles picking a quality blade to start with that is Shave ready.

I've been looking at Momentum Grooming and Fendrihan.com | DOVO Straight Razors Sites,

The Fendrihan site says:

This blade has been honed by D. Gauthier, an experienced straight razor sharpener based in Montreal. Mr. Gauthier has honed and restored hundreds of razors for clients all over the globe. Each blade sold here is sharpened to perfection on a variety of hones and finished on a japanese Nakayama Maruichi stone, giving it a very sharp, yet smooth shaving edge.

Which leads me to believe that the razors are shave ready, although it does not say this.

Does anyone have any experience with either of these stores?

I have no experience, and would like your thoughts on the razors I've been looking at:

Get your first razor from the classifieds here. Better deal, shave ready in most cases and you can decide what you like in a razor before you drop a large sum.

All of those are nice blades. I would highly recommend the pre-sharpened option. Or for a lot less money you could pick up a nice razor in the classifieds on this forum.

Whatever you decide make sure it's shave ready.

Alfred at Fendrihan is a great guy to deal with .... the presharpened Dovo's he is selling have been honed by SRP's Floppyshoes (aka Dan). If you want new, you can't go wrong with these.

If you want vintage, check the classifieds.

And don't be afraid of old razors, they shave just as good or better than anything made today.

Thanks everyone, I've had a couple offers from other members, so I'll definitely take a look at those, and keep my eyes on the classified section. Sounds like a used razor might be cheaper than buying new.

P.S. Rick, I noticed you're in the Halifax Area, do you know of any stores that are good for shaving supplies?

Yes used razors would generally be cheaper than new ones (sometimes not though but then you'll typically be getting much better or much rarer razor for your money), and in my opinion a honed razor isn't really new anymore either, but in my book that's a good thing
Most important is that your razor is honed as the current manufacturers don't seem to provide them sharp enough for the taste of most of us here.

Yup.. I would check the classifieds.. I havent bought a brand new razor yet.

If a razor is good enough not to throw away in about 50- 100 years of use.. its good enough for me.
