HELP< Look at these

OK guys got some ?'s. Trying to figure out what back of a strop is made of. In the pics one strop came with 2 pices back to back. One piece heavy leather and rough on back, other smoothe leather with ? on back. Do not think it is canvas, looks more like cordoroy[don't think I spelled it right}. Pick #4 is the one i'm interested in. By the way the rough leather and ? side are on the inside of the two strops when attached to each other, the way it came.

Also, does it look like anything needs to be done to heavy leather side? Thanks in advance Paco

the fourth pic looks like the canvas that came with my Illinois 206, but mine is white. it was a lot stiffer then i thought it would be, and there is barely any draw to it, but i got used to it and it seems to work good.

The first one has just the flesh side of the leather at the back - a bit loose and open though. The other looks like a man-made material - try heating a pin head to red hot (hold it in pliers) and touch it to a not too important place - if it melts, its not natural.

If it's canvas it feels very soft, like I said before cordoroy.

Maybe if you posted the brand of the strop someone with that make could help.

Offhand to me it looks like a leather with a rough (unfinished) back for one piece and black latigo or perhaps some synthetic material with a milled back for the other piece.

There are a few strops such as the Illinois 827 that have that ribbed effect on the back of the strop such as you see on picture 4.

Don't throw it away, if your new to this use it for a practice strop or something.

I have no idea how bad a zeepk strop is, I only know to stay away from the brand. But does anyone know if the best part of it might be worth pasting? It at least would find some use, then get a good daily strop.

maybe paste pic 2 and 3 ?

I cut the leather off from one such strop, glued it to a board and abraded the top side with very fine wet'n'dry paper until it was velvety. It took CrOx powder very well and worked fine.

PS: it leaves you with swivel gear (although not brilliant quality) and a handle with attachment loop should you ever get a bit of decent leather to make your own strop with.
