    Default New Straight User

    Hello all!

Recently have ventured into the realm of straights and actually just purchased a shave-ready razor today. Looking forward to getting it and seeing what the fuss is about. I've been doing tons of research and already I want to buy more razors just for the unique designs and type of blade.

I've been DE shaving for about 9 months but have been deciding to see what the craze is about and already I'm getting an itching to try out my new razor.

Hopefully I'm able to learn more from all the knowledgeable members here

    I purchased a J.A. Henckels 5/8 round point(Fixed, thx gugi) shave ready.

First of all, welcome aboard. Your razor looks impressive, what a good way to start. Allow me to recommend taking a look at the wiki if you haven't already done so, there is a lot of useful information for new users. I wanted to made you aware that there is more to shaving than a sharp razor. Along with it, proper stropping technique, use the right angle and pressure, prep your beard and make a decent lather are the keys to success. . These are all the areas that need to be looked into. I will suggest checking out the stropping videos in the general section or watching Lynn's dvd. The wiki also has a section on stropping. Try not set your expectations too high initially and pay attention to the angle and pressure you are using, it is very hard to change it a bit and change the entire shaving dynamics. Perhaps these links from the wiki would help:

Basic Shaving Passes - Straight Razor Place Wiki

The Multiple Pass Shaving Technique - Straight Razor Place Wiki

Advanced shaving techniques for the straight razor - Straight Razor Place Wiki

Shaving videos - Straight Razor Place Wiki

Good luck and definitely let us know how it goes.

    Al raz.

Thanks to you all, yea I sort of bought it on a whim from someone and it was slightly pricy but I feel I'm going to get a very decent and good quality razor. Talk to some other people and they felt the henckels was a very nice quality razor so I just manned up and bought it.

As far as prep goes, I've been used to shaving with the DE so I know proper prep. Have been using the same way consistently and have gotten fantastic to un-fantastic shaves from my DE.

I know one of the things I still need to buy is a strop which I will be picking up shortly. Thanks again to you guys and I will let you know how it goes definitely.

Thanks guys! I can't wait to get it, going to have some nice hair growth to test it on for sure.

Actually also found out my dad has an old straight he got from my grandfather, not sure of quality and condition but apparently he said it's never been used and still has the box. Should be picking it up this week with pics to follow.

    Welcome to SRP,

Yes, henckels razors are quite nice, I've become partial to the friodurs, and this one looks nicely restored. It's not a spike though - round point is what that's called

I'm partial to vintage razors, would be cool to see your find. Some day I'll find my grandfathers razor too, and hopefully it'll still be useable....
