Got a Wapi from The Invisible Edge, came shave ready and shaved great, i used a shavette as well, was very sharp but not the same feel as a straight.

Although it made me want a real straight - so i guess it paved the way...

I will attest to the shavette being a decent learning tool but also not very forgiving...I have yet to buy a real straight and thought the same thing that I would try the Shavette and see if I like it. For someone who does not like a slow learning curve the shavette may deter you before you give it its due chance...the blades are way to sharp and harsh...I still use it and am getting better...(It definately teaches the importance of a light touch)...I also agree with the above comment about the DE...I have a Merkur HD and love that razor(now that i found a good blade)...it gives a great shave with a little less effort than the straight...

but dont get me wrong as soon as i save up i am going to go all out...TM strop ... new dovo SS razor...

Let me tell you one thing you will love even if you go back to cartrige...(which if you hate the straight i think you would like the de...) is you will love using a brush and soap...later on if you can swing it go for a badger brush...far superior to a boar brush...and some nice soap or cream...doesnt have to be expensive...lots of good creams and soaps for cheap...

My recomendation is the Dovo Shavette, and once you're committed to straight razor shaving, then get the Wapi, a strop and a hone, you'll need the three of them.

Yup, I was thinking along similar lines. Make the modest investmen in good soap and a decent brush (as you say, can be inexpensive; I doubt if my best brush was more than six or eight dollars), because it will add to the pleasure and quality of any wet shave, even if you end up using a SuperMegaMach XLIV with a thirty-six-blade disposable cartridge.
