Looking at your pictures, I do not think that you need additional string, pass the black piece of rope on top of the door knob and then open a loop in it and pass the strop through, pull the strop and voila. The lanyard should work well too. When you strop, pull the strop in the plane of the door so you do not take is out of the knob... ;-)
