Thread: Another newbie

Hello gentlemen, my name is Sergio but everyone calls me Serg. I've been DE shaving for about a year and a half with excellent results, and have been a member of SMF for about the same amount of time (Same user name). I believe I have become quite adept at using the various soaps, creams, and brushes I have acquired thus far. But I have felt as though I'd like to go the the next step and try a str8. Though I'm on a tight budget I'd still like to take the plunge and join the ranks of those who are able to put a solid blade on one's cheek and come out unscathed.

Hi Serg. Welcome, I also new to straight razor shaving, I just had my first shave yesterday with a DOVO 6/8 Special , I was able to do my entire face and neck without a nick and I had a great time.

Straight razors tend to be generally more expensive than DE ones, but it's not prohibitive or anything, it's the same order of magnitude anyways.
You've probably figured it out already from other posts but the cheapest options are either a vintage razor from the classifieds, or a double arrow or wapienica which can be had in new condition for $15-$30.
What really matters is that the razor has been sharpened by somebody who is experienced at this. Of course coming from SMF you probably know this already - there is straight-razor expertise there too.

Hi Bud, very cool I have yet to meet up with nun2sharp and he's offered several times to show me some stuff, I need to make some time to meet up with you guys soon. Some lessons in stropping would be a lot better in person than reading about it.

the fun thing about straight shaving is that you can do it on almost any budget.
My cheapest razor is a $7 razor (it cost me more to sand it and to get it sharpened) and my most expensive one was $90 excluding shipping. additional you would need a strop and eventualy something to touchup your razor.

Thanks for the welcome gentlemen. I think I'll post over in the classifieds for a str8. I thought I would have to spend for at least a Dovo Best or TI Le Grelot (then have it sent to be sharpened), and then for a strop at over $60. And Mike no worries, us newbies have to stick together!

There are a few people you can pickup a cheap good strop from The Well Shaved Gentleman, Heirloom Razor Strop Company, Straight Razor Shaving Supplier Tony has a practice strop and here, RupRazor - Strops ken has some good stuff and some good starter stuff. As well the classifieds is a great place to get a good razor for cheap. But you can never go wrong with a dovo. There are many vendors listed hear on this site look at the bottom of the forum page, there is a spot for vendors. Welcome to SRP and I hope you find what your looking for.

I hear ya man, You might already know this but if you buy a razor from Straight Razor Design it will come Shave ready. I bought mine from them and didnt buy a strop because I wanted to see if I was going to like shazing with a straight and it turns out that I really like it, but now I cant shave again untill I order a strop from Tony Miller.
