    Hi, John here.

Had some experience with wetshaving in general, and am just breaking into the world of the straight razor.

Looks like a great community here. Thanks for all the advice you've given me, indirectly, so far.

    All the best,

    John

    Hello. Welcome to the forum!
How far have you got then? Do you have a razor yet, or have your eye on any?

Welcome to SRP! If you haven't already done so check out the SRP Wiki on the toolbar above. Scroll down for great tutorials. I too started straight razor shaving after a grounding in DE shaving. Having the prep and multiple pass technique down helped me to make an easier transition.

I have a "Red Devil" from Wm. Marvy Co. St Paul, MN.

Three somewhat successful shaves, and no blood loss, yet.

'Though my wife barged into the bathroom when I was on my last few strokes at the base of my neck, this morning, and I nearly finished myself off at that point. The shave was then completed with a coupla strokes from a Gillette New, as I didn't have the nerve to go on...

Hi John.. welcome to SRP.. just curious... do you have a straight already? or are you just getting into the process of finding that beautiful razor to scare those whiskers away..

edit: should read the whole thread before replying...

Well whatever you do and wherever you are... Have fun..

Just found out that life's to short to spend shaving with crapy razors..

A Gillette 'new' is a fine DE. My first few weeks shaving I used a DE (Merkur Slant) to do my mustache and chin. SRP founder Lynn Abrams actually recommends that to new straight shavers. Here is a good thread he posted on the topic.

Ain't it the way. I specifically told my wife I needed to concentrate with this open blade and what does she do on one of my very first shaves, but try to start up a conversation with me. I think she just thought it was cool and wanted to hang out while I shaved, but I politely bowed out and very soon after she was at it again. I simply shut the door on her the second time. Harsh, but ...
That was over three years ago. It's different now.
