Thread: Need help choosing a razor

Hello
I have never used a straight razor before, and would like to give it a try, I really need help in choosing the right razor and where to buy it, I would like to get a kit if possible, a good kit without having to sell the farm, I don’t have a beard or anything like that my goal is to stop buying those expansive disposable razors, I would also like to buy the DVD talked about hear, is there a link to buy it? I believe this is something I will keep doing and enjoy but I’m not sure, I read some articles in the newbie section about the cuts thy got, that’s kind of what I’m worried about, my dad use to shave with a straight razor and he would say DON’T TOUCH THAT IT WILL CUT YOU, buy the time I got ready to shave everybody was using disposable razors, that was the late 70’s those were the days, enough rambling, any help would be appreciated, and thanks in advance.

Please start checking classified section for Shave ready razor's and as you mention about Lynn's dvd.if i am not mistaken it should be on classified too.Be patient , i am sure you will find complete kid in classified too.i know someone used to sell it don't know still or not.
Please spend a little time on WIKI there is priceless advises and use youtube for shaving vido's .Good luck and ask any questions you have.

I'd look in the classifieds or ruprazor (member's page). for a low cost razor that will still be good.

if i would of known more when i started i would have picked up a straight razor with a smiling blade. they provide alot of angles and i imagine they would be good for a newer shaver. but i got my first straight razor as a gift. so i had no choice in the matter...welcome to srp

my recommendation, as a not too old hand (started in June or jUly I think).

1. blade, definitely look in the classifieds
2. try to get somebody to part with their Tony Miller practice strop (no, I have mine earmarked for my uncle )
3. get just a starter brush, and dare I say (don't stone me guys) the brush isn't super necessary
4. dont' buy the fancy creams etc. and distract yourself. get some of the head razor brand shaving cream from walgreen's or rite aid. that stuff is great and builds lather. I can take and build lather on my face rubbing it without the brush.

I GAVE my brother a razor, strop, brush and sample shaving creams and soaps, he didn't take to it. if you start this way and don't like it you won't lose out much. just my 2c

My recommendation is this:
- look in the "Buy / Sell / Trade" forum and click on honing service forum
- check who provides honing services for members and see if THESE GUYS have any razors for sale in the straight razor sales forum
- if so, buy one; if not, send them a PM telling them you're new and need a shave ready razor. These guys are knowledgeable and are sitting on dozens of razors (each) - you're bound to get a truly shave ready razor from one of them.

You'll also need a strop to keep the edge aligned. You can also find these in the "Buy / Sell / Trade" forum or from a vendor (see "vendors corner" forum).

Congratulattions and welcome to SRP! You wont find a better site or people to help you with ANY question you may have. Go to the classified section here. You should be able to find a good razor for $40-$50. You'll most definitely want a strop also. Don't go to e-bay like I did at first. You'll get ripped off. I know from experience! Get a strop from Coming Soon.... That's Tony Miller's site. The best Strops in the field and he won't rip you off! Oh, and one more thing, DO NOT get discouraged. Take your time, study the video's and listen to the guy's here and you'll have the greatest shaves you've ever experienced! Welcome, good luck and God Bless!
