Thread: Training the non dominant hand

I am waiting on my first straight to arrive. I currently shave with a DE safety razor.

Shaving one handed with a DE is not a big deal, but it seems like it would be a good thing to see what i'm doing when i shave the left side of my face.

Does anyone have any advice for "training" my left hand to handle a straight?

Yes. Brush your teeth with your left hand for 2 full weeks.
The first few days it will feel weird beyond words
But after 2 weeks you will have a significant increase in motor skills and dexterity in your left hand and wrist.

Second, DON"T PANIC!!

Third, do you have your towel?

Fourth, you can train your off hand in a variety of ways. I learned piano from an early age, and I was made to brush my teeth, use my spoon, etc. left handed ( I am right handed). I still do those same things with my left hand today.

So I would suggest trying a few things that require fine or medium motor skills with your non-dominant hand if you can.

i work in IT and am in front of a computer all day. What do you think about using a mouse left handed?

Muscle memory is activity specific. In other words... you need to practice the activity to get better at it.


Luckily, there is some small data to support learning overflow from one side to another. So shave with the right, and your left hand will get better at it too!

When I learned to play backgammon, I played against a very good player for very high stakes. You learn fastest when it hurts if you screw up. By that theorem, just go to it!!

I'm not proud of it, But I secretly practiced shaving with a butter knife. It made me very confident to put the razor in my left hand when it came time to shave.

xman, I have some razors that are about that sharp!!

I think the left mousing is good as it will teach you to not only move the hand but the fingers independently. eat with the left hand etc. I'm pretty much ambidextrous, my kindergarten teacher said I oscillated. I think I ended up right dominant because I have a left eye problem. anyways, shaving left wasn't too bad for me, but I still don't feel as comfortable with it as I do with my right.

Welcome to SRP. I don't want to discourage you from going ambidextrous but I don't and I get along fine. If you shave with the dominant hand you will find The you'll discover where to peek around the stretching hand. I have no problems getting around my shave area or seeing what I am doing.

That said, I tried a few times and gave it up. I may give it a whirl again but it is on the back burner. On Lynn's DVD he demonstrates shaving with either hand and I think that may also be in the video section of the forum here. There are some suggestions on beginning straight razor shaving here that I found very helpful early on.
