Thread: Razor for Precision Cutting Individual Hairs? (for styled beard, mustache)

Have a razor modified by one of our resident restorers! maybe take a 4/8s razor and shorten it to about a 1 inch spike point! There are also corn razors that you might be able to sharpen to shave ready and use with no modification at all!

One of the nicest I have seen is actually the Fillarmonica 3/8 that Classic was selling for $49 I am not sure that they still have that razor....

Any of the smaller 4/8, 5/8's will do the job quite nicely, the only real trick is that they have to be wicked sharp, sorta sharp, or shaving sharp, just does not "cut" it so make sure the razor you get can handle .50 and .25 diamond paste and hold that edge... Most of the razors I have found that can do that are the vintage American razors.... Trimming around facial hair is why I started using a straight back in 1981 when I grew my first beard, it is really easy to get straight lines with a straight razor... The technique is a little different from normal straight razor shaving, as you don't use the nice smooth strokes that everyone else talks about, you will be using small short strokes and just tiny touches to clip single hairs, which is why the razor has to be so sharp...

I really like a Spanish point razor to trim around the edges of my mustache and sideburns...
but as gssixgun said it has to be wicked sharp.

What I've understood is that a French point is the same as a spike only that the top corner at the spine is rounded off for some reason, probably just cosmetic. Dunno if it's sharpened to the very edge, but if you have classic sharpen it for you they can probably put a better edge on the end as well!

EDIT: Just noticed that it's Lynn (who is an Admin here) that does the sharpening for classic, so I think the above request won't be a problem.

i believe the french point is rounded at the edge.
and i don't think currently lynn is the only honemeister for classicshaving.
i think i saw an ivory heljestrand mk30 with chipped tip on ebay few days ago, that may be a good candidate for modification.

Yeah, you're right, it's quite obvious that it's rounded if you have a look at Dovo's catalog. If you wanted to grind down one of those you would probably have to use the 4/8" model and grind it down to 3/8" to get a sharp spike on it.

I was going to mention the chipped tip heljestrand too, but it'd already gone.
