    Default Greetings!

    Hey Everyone,

I figured it was time to say hello lol, I've been lurking on the forums and classifieds since 2008 and finally decided to take the plunge. Straight razors have fascinated me for a while and I'm still in the process of finding my first blade. (being a student these things can get a bit pricey).

Funny story is I finally found one in the classifieds but missed it some lucky person ended up with a good razor for a good price! congrats to the winner on that one! lol. Anyhow it prompted me to sign up and finally take that first step.

Everyone on here seems really knowledgeable and I've been reading about honing and stropping, I've watched all the videos about 50 times and now I think I'm ready to give this a shot. I'm not new to honing steel or steelwork I've done some work with swords and hilting. So, I think those skills will transition over nicely.

Anyhow I figured I'd finally step up and say hello! and thanks to everyone for the wealth of knowledge that's been shared on this forum.

    Cheers,

    - Tam -

    Default Greetings

    Tam,

Welcome to the forum. You will find tons of useful information here. Get a shave ready razor and get started. Don't get discouraged at first. The initial learning curve is steep, but with a little persistence, you will do fine. I personally found that the learning curve for me was measured in months, not shaves. I found Christopher Moss' "The Art of the Straight Razor Shave" very helpful. Find it here: http://www.shavemyface.com/downloads...azor-Shave.pdf . After two years now I can't imagine going back to my old Track II and haven't used it in 18 months. Best of luck!

    Scott

    G'day & welcome.
Sounds like you're doing the right research.
    Should go well for you.

Yeah, that happens frequently on the classifieds. Just get a little vigilant watching what comes up and what is a really good price. Do a check or two early in the day. Blind luck will shine on you soon enough if you keep at it. No matter what, there will be another one coming down the pike.

While my undergraduate days are quite some time behind me I can certainly relate when it comes to the dollars issue. What razor are you converting from? Some razors operate simar to each other and therefore demand some of the same skills. There are some ways to cut some corners temporarily until you get to a point where you can access a little bit more dollars. A shavette, while not a real straight is quite a bit cheaper then a true straight is demands a lot of the same skills as a true straight would. It will get your feet wet while you wait until you can access some additional dollars. A leather belt, while not a strop, is quite a bit more corser than a strop would be, but it can help get your feet wet with that shavette. A shavette and a belt is a bit of hersey but will get you started. Another way to address this is to make the jump little by little rather than all at once.

Welcome! as long as you follow the advice of the guys on here you will be just fine. patience is a key but at the same time it doesn't take forever to get to the point of having some pretty good shaves. the journey from pretty good to great can take a bit (i'm still not there ) but is still very rewarding.

Good luck, though it isn't always needed.
