Thread: New guy.... first shave...

new guy here...

I lurked the SRP for quite some time now, while waiting for all my first "get started" little kit, and I simply got plenty of infos.
Well.... Last week I got the Dovo Strop, and the Norton 4k/8k
And tonight, coming home from work.... the razor just arrived.

*I don't have the budget for a high quality thingie.... so I got a Double Arrow (no logo) on ebay wich from previous posts it seemed a good deal to learn with... (under 20$$ shipped here)*

anyway.... razor here.... meant spent evening honing it, and I just shaved with it.

WOW it's just an amazing sensation.

Of course the first shave was not that great (I mean... first straight shave switch from a fusion) I did two passes, one WTG and one XTG, with proraso soap, only two little little nicks... just to remember me to stay zen. But overall I'm quite pleased with it.

And probably the honing wasn't perfect, because it felt a little dragging, today I just wanted to get it at a shave-possible state. But tomorrow I will correct those mistakes.

you are right in thinking it needs more hone time... do you have any stones coarser than the 4k?

if not getting the bevel right will take some patience but it can be done!

Remember to have your angles right too.

nope.... right now I only have that norton 4k/8k
I was thinking that maybe I could buy the other combination stone that norton offers... the 220/1k.... so I could have more coarser stuff.... but right now (and also budget wise) i'm stuck with the 4k minimum....

But one interesting thing is that for the first time in my live I'm actually looking forward to my next shave.

If you have already gotten a shave that did not send you running, seems to me you are closer to being good than bad on your edge – you do NOT want a coarser stone at this time. The 4000 side is fine even if you need to do some clean up. The 8000 side is considered where a shave worthy edge can start if you have the skills. I got a couple DA’s that when new were shave able but not quite shave ready. My Norton 4000/8000 plus CrOx pasted paddle strop are all I’ve ever needed on the DA’s.

You're in it now. If you can get a decent shave from one of those with just a Norton combo and no prior experience I'd say you're doing pretty well. Keep striving for the sharp edge and the shaves will get better and better.

right now, and second shave after an evening of more careful honing, I can say I'm pleased with the result.... even if I'm sure that it must be far from the real standard you're in....but it's a start...

but one thing.... I can't seem to gave the best edge in the toe of the blade.... the blade is quite good now... but the the last 3 millimiters (wich courbe a little little little) can't seem to get the same quality of edge the rest of the blade get....

Am I doing something wrong?

I see that you're having trouble with the heel of your razor...

I had the same problem with my first razor and I found out that, when doing the X-stroke, I left the surface of the hone with the heel too soon and it didn't get all the honing that rest of the edge did... Therefore it was always a bit duller than the rest of the edge... Try not to leave the surface of the hone with the heel too soon...

If you can shave with the razor (I see that you can) but it just doesn't feel quite there, I would recommend a nice finishing stone (belgian yellow, spyderco ultra fine or chinese 12k) or paddle strop with chromium oxide or 0,5 micron diamond paste...
I have chromium oxide on the back of my hanging strop and it works just fine...
