Thread: How sharp is sharp enough, any kind of test?

As a hobbyist knife maker I know there are more ways than one to achieve the same result, and just wondered how you test if a razor is shaving sharp? I'm currently using a piece of leather glued to a block of wood with autosol paste rubbed in followed by an old leather belt correct? Also my razor is a dovo stainless if it makes any differece

The best way to see if a razor is ready to give a good shave, is to actually shave with it. You should do some reading in the hone and strop sections of the forum, and consider sending the razor to one of our honemeisters for the initial honing so you have a benchmark.

+1 on shave test. If a str8 shaves well, that's all I care about. All of my str8s are extremely sharp, but I didn't understand a good shave until I got a shave ready Dovo. Now I'm sending out my other str8s to be properly honed.

It really is sort of subjective. For me, I got a pro-honed razor, used the TPT on the blade, hovered it above my arm hairs and cut them, shaved with it again and then learned that all I had done was figure out what that particular blade was like when sharp. All my other razors are a little different and I know them like children now!
