Thread: newb saying hi

Hey guys

I was looking up about straight edge shaving recently and am gonna swtich to it...i have been lurking around reading up about everything needed..I wont be getting everything for a few months since it was just Christmas and all and I need to save up again from all the spending i just did hah..Anyway what i have down to get to get set up is.

Norton 4000/8000 stone
The Dovo "Classic Black", 5/8" Carbon Steel --from vintage blades and am gonna get it pre-honed
A TM strop--not sure what yet since he is closed down right now

I already have a badger brush and some shavin soap..

Anything else really that is necessary?

Also I love how helpful everyone is on this forum. I have been on others and people get frusterated at eachother. Here everyone seems respectoful towads eachother..Jus wanted to let you all know

Welcome, always good to see new people that have the same ideas as I did when I started out. This is a great forum, you will be hard pressed to find a question that some of our members dont have the answer to. For the set up it looks good as far as I can see, if you get it pre-honed you dont ABSOLUTELY need the the norton but I am sure that it will come in handy. Hope you have as much fun at it as I do

something i am having trouble finding out is how often the razor needs to be honed..i have read like every 3 weeks which is why i thouht i better get a norton..

hi there welcome to the club. It looks like your equipment needs are all taken care of the only other thing you'll need is patience and perserverence to develope and refine your new skill. once again nice to meet you.

Sounds like you've got a pretty good idea. Personally I'd swap the Norton for a Coticule, but that's about it, just about anything from Tony Miller is the way to go. Good luck, and welcome.

A HUGE +1 on the "pre-sharpened razor"

Welcome Keith. Are you in Northern, Central or Southern Cali?

I think that setup is great. The only two things I would suggest, is a TM practice strop along with the TM strop. Also, a cheap razor, ($10-$30) ebay special, to practice honing.

The TM practice strops are pretty cheap when you buy a strop from him. You really don't want to nick up a TM strop more than you have to.

You'll want to learn to hone on something you're not relying on to shave with, so a practice razor is a good idea. Also having one pre-sharpened will give you a very high bar to shoot for when learning to hone. You'll know what "sharp" is.

Excellent! We're planning another Northern California SRP Meet for the beginning of next year. Some great guys showed up last time. I recommend coming by if you've got the time.

You might add something to your kit to flatten your hone.

I think Stamps222 on Eboy still sells Double Arrow razors for about $10 (less shipping). They make great practice razors and good shavers, too.
