Thread: New guy with razor here

Ok, so I have been using safety razors for about a month now and was considering buying a straight razor.
Well today I was in atlantic city on a mission to buy soap and cream ( and a present for my dad) at AOS.

Well being me, I decided to check out their razors, and I bought one because I know if I didn't pull the trigger then I would have backed out when looking at them online.


According to the guy at the store it is shave ready, but we all know how that goes.
It'll shave my arm pretty well.. But my thumb isn't acute enough for a TPT.

So from experience does anyone know if TI razors from AOS are truly shave ready or should I get the services of a honemiester?

Can anyone recommend any good honemiesters?

First, welcome to SRP Kevin! Lots of great and knowledgeable people here. Don't be afraid to ask any question you have.

I don't have any experience with AOS, but you might want to contact them and asked who honed it. If they say it came shave ready, don't believe it. You will have to get it honed by someone who knows what they are doing. Your face will appreciate it. Check out the services part of the classifieds for honemeisters. In the meantime I recommend getting a copy of Lynn's CD. Great information!!

You might also consider listing your location in your post. An evaluation could be easier than you think. For example, Dward, lives in Germantown MD and I live very close to there and run through there quite a bit.

In fact there may be a member very close to you that could take a look at it very easily and tell you.

Most likely it does need to be honed though.

The Art of Shaving razors come straight from the factory, they do not do anything to them. I would imagine that they are at least close to being shave ready. Did you get one with fancy scales?

I do honing as do a number of others here @SRP, check the classifieds and PM the member that interests you.

Even the good new blade makers (TI, Dovo) are notorious for claiming shave ready out of the box when in fact they are usually not. If someone honed it prior to sale it is generally considered an extra and you can be pretty sure if they did not charge you for it, it did not happen. Can we assume you have a strop? This is a “got to have” even if you have a truly shave ready razor.

Yes, I have a strop and I am sending it out for honing tomorrow.
