Thread: Need a nudge

If I were to purchase a DOVO Straight Razor 5/8, what does the 5/8 mean? I'm deciding if I should go straight razor or safety razor. Any insight provided would be greatly appreciated.

5/8 refers to the width of the blade measured from the spine to the edge of the blade. 5/8 = 5/8ths of an inch. For what it's worth, I recently started with straights. I had been using a DE for almost a year. While the DE gives a great shave, I always wanted to try straights and did so recently. I'm still learning the technique, but I definitely plan on adding straights to my collection. One bit of advice if I may - take it slow. Start with reading up on the techniques and tools of this delight. Then buy a razor and strop and test the waters. If you like it and plan on keeping with straights, then look into some hones. You may even eventually wander into restoration of razors. I didn't do this - I dove in head first. I had hones, a razor, strop, scale material, and razors for restoration all within a two week period. If I hadn't wanted to continue with the straight - I'd be out a good bit of cash.

As BJC says the 5/8 is the blade width. Please feel free to read the Wiki and the stickies about shaving with a straight as well as the gear you will be needing.

when you purchase the razor please make sure that you get ti honed by an expert most oft he sponsors here offer the options for about $20 on a new blade. you will also need a strop and that is all you really need to start... but the list of things you will WANT is huge!

Dovo's are a good place to start! but the vintage ones in the classified are often great deals!

welcome! so why do you need to choose between a straight and a safety. vintage safety razor are easy to find on Ebay for good prices so you won't be out much. i am a straight shaver myself but i do grab my safety razor a couple times a month and use it as you can get a great shave from them.

my first razor was a Dovo Best Quality and i still use it, among others. it is a very middle of the road, good shving razor. i doubt you would be disappointed with a Dovo.

theres only one way to know if straight shaving is for you and that is abviously to try it.

A nudge eh? You mean like the guy about to jump out of an airplane with a parachute for the first time and he needs the guy behind him to give him a kick in the butt to go out the door?

Make that decision to use a straight because you have weighed all the options and decided it was right for you. Don't be talked into it.
