Thanked: 101My Gear
Hey guys I posted about a week ago about my venture into shaving and a description of what I had and how I had to refurb it......................Sooooooo I figured I would post a few pics of my goodies. They will probably make the purists cringe in disgust, but it's what I got and I use it. Pics are of my mug, brush (Walmart cheapie), blade, homemade paddle hone (loaded w/Flitz) and my after shave. Pics were taken on my reloading bench, sorry for the mess.

Hello,
I missed your previous post.
I'm not cringeing, but am amazed at your gear! How do the shaves feel?

Thanked: 101Shaves feel great. The only time I bleed is when readjust blade while still touching skin.(DUMB!) I double shave (WTG,ATG) My face feels slick when done and I shave every morn before work. Takes a little while, but I get it done. I just made another paddle hone and hit the edge a few passes then went and shaved. Smmmmmoooooooooooootttttthhhhhhhhhhh.

Thanked: 101Bought this straight many years ago at a junkshop for 1 dollar. It was trashed in the plastic 2 part case. I really don't think it was ever used though, no honing or sharpening marks. I scoured all the rust off of it and put it up. The blade edge was severely pitted. My wife used it a little in the sewing kit for trimming threads. I got ballsy a few months back and took about an 1/8 in. off the edge and reground it. Did the whole bread knife thing to get the flat right. I then took it to the diamond stone then the Arkansas stones then a bunch of stropping. I usually keep my pocket knives razor sharp so keeping a keen edge on the straight isn't terribly hard. Yeah the gear is Mad Max. I don't mind it! Make due with what you have right?!

Thanks for posting those pics EMC. Awesome that setup is working for you, and you're enjoying yourself.
BTW, that razor could be cleaned up nicely if you are ever interested. Looks like a fun project when/if you put another razor in your rotation.

I'd say it's probably quite the opposite - doesn't look like you did much to that razor, so a purist would approve very much.
And yeah, it's only the edge that matters, so as long as the rest of the steel is reasonably hygienic i don't see anything wrong shaving with a deeply pitted blade. If you don't mind the looks you can save some hours of sanding.
It most certainly doesn't shave as it was intended originally - you've gotten past the secondary hollowing, so it should be a fairly stiff now.
enjoy

Thanked: 101I usually just hit the edge about 20 times each side with the homemade job in the pic and have a go at it.
