Thread: eBay treasures or trash?

Hi,
I saw these on eBay, and being my first vintage and first eBay razor purchase, thought i'd check that these are indeed a good deal.

The first is a Joseph Rodgers, (the point is fine, just not in the picture)



And the second is a Crown & Sword

I can see the Crown & Sword blade has a small chip, but never having done any resto. work does this look significant?

Anyway, together (inc. postage) i'm expecting to pay about 60AUD which is about 40USD.

I am most interested in the first razor which i could get for about 40AUD = 25ish USD

Does this sound like a good deal? Should i live large and buy both razors, just the one, or none at all?

Any advise, suggestions or warnings will be greatly appreciated as my previous razor experience has been 2 Double Arrows i bought new.

Live large !!

The chip doesnt look too bad. Might be a good intro to restoration for ya.

They aren't trash, but if you want me to evaluate them you'll have to mail them to me first for a long, drawn out testing period

If you keep looking you may find better deals, but maybe those are decent prices, and especially if those two razors are ones you have been specifically looking for. From what little I see in the Rodgers photo, I like it!

The Rodgers looks like a decent razor, and the brand is a good one. I don't think the prices you mention for them are bad, as mentioned there might be better deals, but it's not a bad deal IMHO.

The chip on the Crown and Sword looks like it would hone out fairly easy so it should be worth getting it.

They certainly look good to me - although I wish there is more of the rodgers. both brands I like and in pretty good condition.

I agree with Gugi - both brands are good. If they are in decent shape I think you have a good deal there. Most of the razors I have bought in Aus. were $60 each!

This is all new to me, so bare with me.
I have 2 straight edge razors and don't know much about them. I was hoping to find out how old they are and maybe their value. I don't have any pics yet, but intend to do so.

Here goes: One razor has "The Crown and Sword Razor" etched into the blade along with the words "EXTRA HOLLOW GROUND" (emblem in between words is, of course, a crown and sword). The Crown and Sword emblem also appears near the hinge along with registered trademark and made abroad. The blade itself is about 3" long and somewhat rounded. The handle is about 6" long, and made from what appears to be some sort of wood, brown (or black) with beige (which could be wear marks. It was in a "cardboard type" case, but not the original case (I'm pretty sure). The case is worn and has something etched in it. Looks like "The Conguero Razor. Overall, the razor is in relatively fine shape, just needs a good cleaning. Any input????

The second razor in my possession is made by H. Boker and Co. with" Solingen: written underneath; there is also an emblem of a "tree" skeleton (no leaves) to the left of these words. This is all found on the hinge. The blade is about 3" and the handle 6". Etched on the blade, in gold lettering is "King Cutter". The words King Cutter are surrounded by a scrolled rectangular shaped border with pointed ends that look like fancy pen "nibs" (in gold). Overall condition is good, no pits, just needs a cleaning, as well.

Any info you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

First welcome to SRP. Let me note that we are not an appraisal service and you should not trust any number you get here.
As far as the age goes I think these questions have come up before. The age of most razors is not very easy to find as they were produced for prolonged periods (both Boker and ERN made razors over many decades). There are books and some online resources which contain dates of production for various companies. I don't have any of them.
