Post Allow me to introduce myself..

Hello, all I have been lurking this site for a while. I finally deicided to join. My first straight was bought from Mr. Lynn Abrams around the time when SRP was still a yahoo group. This was around 4 years ago it was a filly Razor. I got one average shave and stopped beacause I did not understand how to strop or hone back then. I decided to keep it as a collector piece. Around that same time I purchased a Feather Str8 and the super pro, pro and guard blades. The guard blades did not suit me, the pro gave a good shave and the Super pro gave the best shave with around a 48 hours lapse before my hair came back. As I got into my 20's as it should, my beard got very coarse and heavy not to mention moderately sensitive skin. My main set up was a mach 3, feather Str8 super pro blades and creamo cream. Now lets fast foward up intill a year ago I was still using a mach 3 and feather Str8 with creamo cream untill Mach 3 cartridges becames too expensive to afford ( I tend to wear out DE blades and Cartridges very fast due to my coarse beard.) I purchased around that time multiple DE's which I still have and use today. But I was looking for something that gave me the closest shave( so far a feather Str8). I have many Str8 razors that need restoring and scales. I plan to get a strop and some hones so I can start shaving with a Str8 on a more permanet basis I have Bill's restoration CD which I plan to read soon. Thanks everyone for your time.

    Welcome,

Sounds like you're quite ahead in the game. You've got that fili from Lynn, which should be just fine, and you have experience with the feather. Looks like you mostly need a strop. Since you want to restore a bunch of razors I guess you'll want coarse, medium and finishing hones, otherwise I'd have suggested just one good finishing hone will be more than enough to maintain the fili.

Thanks gugi I am thinking to go with the apprentice strop by tony miller. By it does not have a canvas side? What is the purpose of stropping? What does the leather do as opposed to the canvas. Thanks

    Hi there,

Have the price of filly's soared since you got yours?

Stropping re-alignes the blade after the delicate edge gets a battering from the whiskers. It removes no material.

There are mixed ideas on the canvas & many seem not to use it anyway. I do, as all my strops have a canvas or linen side. I've heard that it warms the edge to allow it to re-align better on the leather. Another is that it's simply more aggresive than the leather. That said, I've read of people finding some of their razors responding better to the canvas after the leather. If you ever find out the truth, let me know, please.

Yes Sir the Filly Prices have soared throughout the years I have had it. I purchased it not knowing that the razor would increase in value like it has today.
